Ever since 1958, when Gibson introduced the first semi-hollowbody electric guitar,the timeless ES-335, the company’s engineers have been fine-tuning the concept of combining the classic look of a hollowbody with the performance of a solidbody. Debuting in 2001, the CS-336 is the ultimate result of that quest and it is a true Gibson Custom Shop beauty.

The CS Series is one of the highest rated guitars ever made by Gibson, based on customer surveys and other market research. The back and sides of this guitar are constructed from a single piece of carved mahogany and the reduced size is closer to that of a Gibson Les Paul. These models are highly praised but the high prices led many people to call for a regular production model. These calls were answered in 2007 with the introduction of the ES-339; a guitar the size of a CS-336 but with the laminate construction of the ES-335.

The Gibson CS-336 Figured Top represents the fulfillment of a goal set forth over 100 years ago by Orville Gibson. The mahogany back, sides and centerblock of the CS-336 are tonally carved from a single block of wood (this single-piece construction was one of Orville's original goals) and, when joined to the carved maple top, create a guitar with unsurpassed resonance and woody tone. Its scaled-down body size and slim-taper neck allow for more comfortable playing with no compromise in tone.
